Nassau YRs Stage Tea Party Over 200 Long Islanders protest 'high taxes and big government' |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
April 27, 2009 The Nassau County Young Republicans hosted a Tea Party rally on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Levittown Veteran’s Memorial Park. In the spirit of the Boston Tea Party of 1773, the protest attracted over 200 Long Islanders fed up with high taxes and wasteful government spending. Simon F. Spero, President of the Nassau County Young Republicans, stated, “We fought for our independence over two centuries ago and now it’s being taken from us again. President Obama has used the financial crisis as excuse to increase the government’s involvement in our everyday lives.” The demonstration lasted nearly three hours and included notable speakers such as Brett Joshpe, renowned author and attorney, K.T. McFarland, Security Advisor in the Reagan Administration, and David Webb, founder of the Black Republican Forum. Many of the protestors brought signs with sayings such as “Obama spent his change” and “Liberty is all the stimulus we need,” which reflected the general sentiment of the rally. Rick Santelli of CNBC called for a series of Tea Parties across the nation in response to irrational government spending. Although the Young Republican’s event was not held on April 15 like most of the tea parties, it conveyed the same basic message--Americans won’t stand by to allow the government to waste their money or their children’s money.
The Nassau County Young Republicans is a social organization open to all Republicans ages 14 to 40. If you are over the age of 18, you must be enrolled as a Republican in order to join. Meetings are generally held on the fourth Thursday of each month. More information is available online at www.NassauYRs.com.
