| Michael Kaplan was elected President of the Nassau County Young Republicans on October 26, 2006. Prior to his election as President, he had served as a member of the Board of Directors, Financial Secretary, First Vice President of Campaigns and Elections as well as Acting Executive Vice President. He became a member of the Young Republicans in the Spring of 2002 to get involved with George Pataki's re-election bid. Within that one campaign season, he had volunteered with State Senator Charles Fuschillo, State Assemblyman David McDonough and countless other Republican candidates. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Young Republicans in 2003 and he continued to be more involved with politics. In 2004, he had the unique opportunity to be on the White House Advance Team prior to President Bush's visit to Long Island. He not only had the opportunity to meet the President, but Governor Pataki and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as well. In the summer of 2004, Michael interned with New York State Assemblyman David McDonough (R-I-C, 19th) and starting in the Fall of 2004, he was an Aide to Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Donald X. Clavin, Jr. He was also the Young Republicans liaison with the James Garner for Congress campaign, dedicating countless hours and even earning the nickname "Old Faithful" by Mayor Garner. In 2005, with his boss running for County Comptroller, Michael played an active role with the Clavin for Comptroller campaign. He worked endlessly and while the result wasn't optimal, he learned a great deal of campaigning for countywide office that would later help him in the years to follow. In the Winter of 2006, Michael was accepted into the Washington Semester Program offered through American University, in which he studied American Politics down in the District of Columbia. He met such influential people as Terry Nelson, the current campaign manager for John McCain's Presidential campaign, Helen Thomas, the famous White House correspondent, Congressman Jim Ramstad, and even had the opportunity to witness oral argument at the United States Supreme Court and then meet Justice Anthony Kennedy. While studying down in Washington, Michael interned with the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Peter T. King, the sole Republican in the Long Island Congressional Delegation. His knowledge of Long Island politics and his dedication and steadfastness earned him the nickname "The Machine" by the Congressman's staff. After the semester ended, Michael continued his internship with Congressman King but back at his District Office in Massapequa Park. At the end of the summer, he went to volunteer on Peter King's re-election campaign and used his prior experience of campaign work to enhance his experience. Michael currently attends Fordham University, where he is studying for his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & Government. His undergraduate studies will be completed in May of 2007. Aside from being President of the Young Republicans, Michael is a member of the Freeport Republican Committee, the Northwest Civic Association, as well as the Freeport Home Rule Party. He is a graduate of Baldwin Senior High School, Class of 2003 and his the receipient of the 2003 Brian G. McAleese 9/11 Scholarship Award for Community Service. He was forced to reluctantly resigned after only a few months in office to pursue a job opportunity in Washington, DC.
